Nongendered Names of the Divine

Non-Gendered Names of the Divine

When you've left fundamentalist religion and are trying to sort out your beliefs, it gets tricky as to what to call your Divine Source.  The Christian God, as is often depicted in the Bible and Church sermons, is a tyrannical and judgemental Sky Daddy who is just waiting for you to fail so that he can send you to Hell for eternity. You might explore other names of Gods and Goddesses, or the more impersonal identifiers such as "Universe."

Most of these names feel off or are too impersonal.  When you've come from a religion that emphasizes a personal relationship with the Divine, it can take some time to figure out just which Divine you want to associate with. It took me years of trial and error and working with different aspects of the Divine to discover this. I believe that there is a larger Divine Source, and that all aspects, names, and Gods and Goddesses are just ways to connect with that Source because of our limited human understanding and capacity.

This is similar to Hindu (Sanatana Dharma) belief that there is one God, and all other avatars are aspects of that One. Most Westerners completely misunderstand this concept. However, it is still important that you find an aspect that you can truly relate to on a more personal level.  Most people who leave fundamentalist religions and Christianity struggle with what to call the Divine.

Different names that are either male or female often just don't feel right. That's why I created a list of non-gendered names of the Divine. You can try out and combine these different names to help re-connect with your Source when you don't want to use more religious identifiers or names. Some of these names are similar to the ones used by the Founding Fathers of the United States, most of whom did not proclaim to be Christian in the sense that most people think or believe.

Many of them wrote or re-wrote their own versions of the Bible, and didn't even believe in Jesus as a Savior, but believed more in following his rule to do good and love others.
